Dr. D. Sen passed away. Ex-chairman & member of Udayan passed away, on 15.12.2011. Our heart felt condolences to the bereaved family.
‘Udayan’ in Bengali means ‘sunrise’ or ‘rebirth.’ And that is exactly what it is for over 300 children who call Udayan home! Udayan does indeed represent the dawning of a new life for them. Udayan is a secular Institution that embraces the three main religions of India: Hinduism, Islam and Christianity all these religions are respected and honoured. The children here range in the age from 4 to 18. All the children are affected by leprosy in some way. Most of them were born in leprosy colonies and have parents who suffer from the disease. About 5% of the children themselves suffer from the disease.

Located in Barrackpore, on the outskirts of Kolkata India, Udayan provides a loving home, and an opportunity for a new life through education,(through both Bengali and Hindi mediums of instruction),food clothing, medical care, access to recreational facilities, and vocational training for children affected by leprosy and its stigma.
For over 40 years, the Udayan family has provided love, care and a bright future to more than 7000 children and thousands of families from the leper colonies in and around Kolkata.

What started on 25th of March, 1970 with eleven children, today caters to 100 girls and 200 boys from the ages of 4 to 18. Born out of the vision and dedication of Fr. James Stevens, OBE, Udayan provides children with the opportunity to grow up as children were meant to – free of the scourge of leprosy and its associated poverty, with the chance to learn, play and live life to the fullest. The healthy and peaceful setting of Udayan is very different from the environment these children were born in. They leave Udayan’s doors with the education and self-confidence necessary to be productive members of society.
Ex-students of Udayan call it, a paradise and a home away from home, and every week Udayan receives visits from its former students – a great testimony to its work!

Friends of Udayan, UK arrived in India on the 7th of february, 2011. They visited Udayan and shared the valuable moments with us.
